Health and Wellness Center - Andrews Air Force Base

Since one of my initial experiences with nutrition, anthropometrics and weight loss/maintenance happened while I was active duty, I thought what better way to learn about what the U.S. Air Force is doing to combat overweight and obesity than to participate at the base Health and Wellness Center (HAWC). This rotation gave me a chance to speak with different dietitians as well as the Health Education Program Manager to find out what is in place to help active duty personnel achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Currently the HAWC has three options for Airmen wanting to loose or maintain their weight, or improve their health status. For some individuals, these options are mandatory depending on their anthropometrics and health status. These include:
  • Healthy Living Program

A mandatory two-hour class for active duty members scoring less than 75 points on their annual Air Force Fitness Assessment.  The initial class must be attended no later than 10 duty days after the member receives their fitness test score.  The HLP emphasizes behavioral change with a fitness and nutritional education segment.

  • Body Composition Improvement Programs

A two-class program required for active duty members that receive a fitness score in the poor category AND have an abdominal circumference of >35" for female and >40" for males. The program addresses behavioral change, nutrition, eating habits and fitness activity. Follow-up appointments for validation of body composition improvement and fitness improvement is held monthly. Classes are 90 minutes each.

  • One-on-one exercise and nutrition counseling

This allows the dietitian or program manager to speak priviately with the Airmen in an attempt to identify problem areas and ways to improve health status.
